Japanese People: What are some good books about Japan and Japanese culture?

Not just books about anime/manga or books about how anime has become an integral part of America because no matter how much I love anime/manga there's a lot more to Japan than that. I want a book that will be good in a art college environment: accurate, up-to-date, fun to read, covers different aspects of Japanese pop culture as well as every day life like holidays, music, festivals, subcultures, and with pictures. Nothing textbook-ish and boring, remember this is for an art college library.
