Best way to get rid of Roaches in an apartment?

We have lived in this place for a year and we are just now starting to see Roaches, We have found 3 in the last month. This really grosses me out! Someone just moved into the complex and I think they brang them in. How do I go about makeing our apartment a Roach free as possible. We are planning on moving ASAP we wanted to move before we noticed this. But we have to wait until we have money so it might be a few months. How do I make sure that the Roaches aren't carried to the new place. I am going to buy some Borax stuff and probably some kind of gel too. Are their any other tips I can do to make sure we kill them. I have a small dog though so I have to be careful not to hurt her.
